The Heart String Ruby keeps going: on either side of the oval, the metal opens into a loop — a teardrop of air edged in moissanite — before it narrows into the band. The loops do two things. They let light in under and around the halo, so the ring looks lighter on the hand than a solid-shouldered halo of the same size, and they give the design its name: two strings tied around a red heart. The stone in this ring is earth-mined and heated. Heating is how the overwhelming majority of rubies in the trade are finished — it is permanent, it does not add anything to the stone, and an unheated ruby of the same colour would cost many times more.
