What moissanite actually is
- Silicon carbide — a genuinely different mineral from diamond, not an imitation of one

Frequently asked questions
Is moissanite the same as cubic zirconia?
No. Moissanite is silicon carbide at 9.25 on the Mohs scale. Cubic zirconia is 8–8.5 and clouds and scratches with wear, usually within a year. Moissanite's brilliance is permanent. They are different stones at different prices, and CZ is routinely sold as moissanite in Pakistan's lower-end market.
What does GRA certified actually mean?
Less than the phrase suggests, and we would rather tell you than let you assume.
GRA is not a gemological laboratory. The cards are pre-printed, purchased in bulk by trading companies with control numbers already assigned, and no facility examines your individual stone. When you verify a number online, you confirm the card is a genuine GRA card — not that anyone measured your moissanite.
Your stone is almost certainly genuine moissanite regardless. What the card does not do is independently grade it. We include one because it is a useful specification record and the convention of the trade — and we call it a grading card, not a certificate. The full explanation is here.
What about D colour and VVS1 clarity?
Nearly every moissanite sold in Pakistan is described as D/VVS1. That grade comes from the printing run, not from a gemologist examining your stone.
Modern moissanite is genuinely grown colourless — it is not a yellow stone treated to hide its colour, which is an outdated claim you may still hear. But if you want your specific stone independently graded, send it to GIA or IGI. They will assess it properly, for a fee. Note that laboratories generally do not assign clarity grades to moissanite the way they do for diamond, which is itself informative about what a VVS1 stamp is worth.
Can anyone tell it is not a diamond?
A jeweller with a loupe can, in about two seconds — moissanite is doubly refractive, so facet edges appear doubled under magnification. A stranger across a room cannot. Buy moissanite because you want moissanite, not because you hope to pass it off as something else.
Which cut should I choose for an engagement ring?
