Zamurd, panna, emerald — one stone, three names
Zamurd (زمرد) is the Urdu and Arabic name for the green beryl the world calls emerald; panna is the name carried over from Sanskrit; emerald is what the laboratory report says. Swat: Pakistan's own emerald source
Pakistan is one of the few countries with a named emerald source of its own. The deposits above Mingora in Swat have been worked since the late 1950s; emerald is also recovered at Khaltaro in Gilgit-Baltistan and Barang in Bajaur.
One honest caveat. Origin is a claim that has to be earned, and it is the easiest thing in this trade to invent. Unless a product page or its certificate names the source, treat any emerald you are shown as unattributed — ours included. We would rather describe the stone in your hand accurately than sell you a valley.
How to judge a zamurd before you buy
Colour carries most of the value
In emerald, colour outranks size. Look for a green that holds under daylight, tube light and phone torch rather than sliding grey or yellow. Too pale reads as pale green beryl rather than emerald; too dark closes up under evening light, and most of our customers wear their pieces at night.
The jardin — why a flawless emerald should worry you
Nearly every natural emerald carries a fine web of internal fissures and crystals the trade calls the jardin. In neelam or yaqoot the trade expects a cleaner stone and prices inclusions down; in zamurd they are ordinary, and your plainest evidence the stone grew in rock rather than a furnace. A large, glassy, entirely clean green stone offered cheaply is almost always lab-created, glass or green quartz under a hopeful name. Detail in our post on emerald inclusions.
Oiling, said plainly
Because those fissures reach the surface, the trade has for centuries filled them with clear, colourless oil, traditionally cedarwood, so light passes cleanly instead of scattering at every crack. It is a disclosed treatment recognised by every major gemmological laboratory, and it is not dyeing: it changes clarity, not colour. What matters is that you are told.
Emerald is not a hard-wearing stone
Those same fissures make emerald far easier to chip than sapphire or ruby. It suits a ring you take off to cook and sleep, not one you never remove. An oiled emerald must also never meet an ultrasonic cleaner, a steamer or a jeweller's torch: heat and vibration drive the oil back out and the jardin turns visibly grey.

Is zamurd the same as panna and emerald?
Yes. Zamurd (زمرد) is the Urdu and Arabic name, panna is the name carried over from Sanskrit and used across Urdu and Hindi, and emerald is the English and gemmological term. All three refer to green beryl, the same mineral.
Are Zanvari's emeralds natural or lab-created?
The pieces in this collection use natural emerald. We do also sell lab-created emerald pieces and moissanite cut in the emerald cut, but those are named as such in the product title and are deliberately kept out of this collection so the two are never confused. If a product title says Natural Emerald, the stone is natural; if it says Lab-Created, it is not.
My emerald has tiny lines and specks inside. Is it damaged?
Almost certainly not. Those inclusions are the jardin, the fine internal garden of fissures and crystals that nearly all natural emeralds carry. In this stone they are normal, and they are the best everyday evidence that the emerald is natural rather than synthetic or glass. A completely clean, glassy green stone at a low price is the one to question.
Is oiling a way of faking an emerald?
No. Filling surface-reaching fissures with clear, colourless oil, traditionally cedarwood, is a long-standing and disclosed treatment accepted throughout the international emerald trade. It improves how light travels through the stone; it does not add or change colour, unlike dyeing. The obligation on the seller is disclosure, not avoidance.
How do I know a zamurd is real if the piece has no certificate?
Look at the stone rather than the story. Natural emerald carries the jardin; a large, glassy, entirely clean green stone sold cheaply is usually lab-created, glass or green quartz. Then ask the seller directly what the stone is and expect a straight answer. How long does a made-to-order zamurd piece take?
Every piece here is made after you order rather than picked off a shelf, so it does not dispatch the same day. Message us with the specific piece and your city and we will confirm the current making time before you pay, so you are never guessing at a date.
Can an emerald ring be resized later?
Treat sizing as a decision you make before ordering, not after. The usual resizing method uses a jeweller's torch on the shank, and that heat is exactly what drives the oil out of an emerald's fissures, so the stone normally has to be unset first, the shank altered, and the stone reset. How do I look after an emerald ring?
Keep it away from ultrasonic cleaners, steam and any jeweller's torch, because heat and vibration can drive the oil out of the stone's fissures and dull it. Emerald also chips more easily than sapphire or ruby, so take the ring off for housework, gym and sleep. Clean it with lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush, remove it before perfume or attar, and store it separately so harder stones do not scratch it. Bring it back to us for repolishing or resetting rather than to a workshop that will heat it.
