Thirty percent off, permanently. Rs. 33,999 crossed out, Rs. 23,799 in red. The same discount, every month, on every ring, at every brand. A sale that never ends is not a sale. It is a price with a story attached.

This is what an engagement ring actually costs in Pakistan, what drives the number, and how to read a price tag that has been designed to be misread.

How much does an engagement ring cost in Pakistan?

Depends entirely on the stone. Here is the honest spread:

Why is every moissanite ring in Pakistan 30% off?

Look across the market and you will see the pattern: Rs. 34,999 reduced to Rs. 24,499. Rs. 33,999 reduced to Rs. 23,799. Rs. 35,000 reduced to Rs. 28,000. Always thirty percent, always running, always on every item.

A permanent discount is a pricing strategy, not a saving. The higher number exists so the lower number feels like a win. If a ring has never once sold at Rs. 34,999, that figure is not a price — it is set dressing.

This is legal, common, and effective. It is also worth recognising, because once you see it you stop comparing discounts and start comparing actual prices. Which is the only comparison that means anything.

What actually drives the price of an engagement ring?

Four things, in order of how much they move the number.

1. The stone. This is nearly everything. Moissanite, natural gemstone, or diamond — the choice sets the floor and the ceiling before anything else is decided.

2. The metal. Silver is priced by craft. Gold is priced by weight, and gold weight does not care how well the ring is made. A plain gold band can cost more than an exquisitely made silver one, because you are buying grams.

3. The setting. A solitaire is four prongs and a shank. A pavé band is forty individually set stones, each one a separate operation at the bench. The second takes many times the labour. This is where silver rings earn their price and where the difference between workshops shows.

4. Who made it. A ring cast in a workshop by people who have done it for thirty years is not the same object as one imported in bulk and rebranded. Both can be honest. They are not the same cost.

How much should you spend on an engagement ring?

You have heard two months' salary. Possibly three.

That rule was invented by an advertising agency. N.W. Ayer created it for De Beers in the twentieth century, alongside "a diamond is forever" — one of the most successful marketing campaigns ever written. It was not a tradition. It was a target, set by people selling diamonds, to establish how much you should be willing to part with.

It worked so well that people now quote it as though it descended from somewhere.

There is no correct amount. There is what you can spend without resentment, and what the person receiving it would actually like. Those two numbers are the whole calculation. Anyone quoting you a multiple of your salary is quoting an advertisement.

Is a cheap engagement ring a bad engagement ring?

No. But a cheap ring described dishonestly is a bad purchase at any price.

A Rs. 8,000 moissanite ring in real 925 silver is a real ring. It will last decades. The stone is genuine silicon carbide, 9.25 on the Mohs scale, and it will outlast the marriage in the statistical sense and hopefully not in the personal one.

The problem is never the price. It is the distance between what is sold and what is said. A Rs. 8,000 ring sold as a Rs. 8,000 ring is good value. The same ring sold as "certified D/VVS1 luxury, was Rs. 30,000" is something else.

What does "GRA certified" add to the price?

Nothing it should.

Nearly every moissanite seller in Pakistan advertises GRA certification, laser-engraved certificate numbers, and online verification. It looks like assurance. It is priced like assurance.

GRA is not a gemological laboratory. The cards are pre-printed, the numbers are loaded into the database before the card ever meets a stone, and no facility examines your moissanite. When you verify online, you confirm the card is a real card. Not that anyone measured anything.

The stone is probably genuine moissanite regardless. The certificate is decoration. If a seller's price is built on that document, you are paying for paper.

Silver or gold for an engagement ring in Pakistan?

Gold holds value. That is its real argument, and it is a good one in a country where jewellery has always doubled as savings.

But understand what you are buying. In a gold engagement ring, most of your money is metal weight. The design, the setting, the finishing — those are a small fraction of the total. You are buying grams with a ring shape.

In silver, almost all of your money is the work. A Rs. 20,000 silver ring contains perhaps a few hundred rupees of metal. The rest is the stone and the hours.

Neither is correct. If you want an asset, buy gold — and be honest that you are buying an asset. If you want an object, silver buys far more object per rupee.

Questions worth asking before you pay

1. Has this ring ever sold at the crossed-out price? Watch the answer.
2. What is the stone, precisely? Moissanite, cubic zirconia, natural corundum, glass-filled. All get sold as "stone."
3. Which laboratory issued the certificate? "Certified" without a lab name means nothing. GRA is not a laboratory.
4. Is the silver hallmarked 925? It should be stamped, and you should be able to see it.
5. What does replating cost? Rhodium wears on every plated ring. If it costs money every eighteen months, add that up over a decade.
6. What will you give me for it later? Most sellers will not answer. Ours is 50% of invoice as exchange credit, or 30% cash.
7. Where is your workshop? An address you can visit beats any certificate.
