Q: How do I measure my ring size at home in Pakistan?

The most accurate method is to measure a ring you already wear on the correct finger. Lay it flat and measure straight across the inside hole with a ruler. That number in millimetres is your size directly. Alternatively wrap string around your finger, measure the length, and divide by 3.14 to convert circumference to diameter.

Walk into a shop in Saddar and ask your ring size. They will say seventeen. Go online to an American site and it will say seven. Both are right, and neither will help you unless you know what they are measuring.

Pakistani jewellers size rings by inner diameter in millimetres. The Americans and British use arbitrary scales with no physical meaning. That is the whole confusion, and it takes one table to clear up.

What does 16MM, 17MM, 18MM mean in ring sizes?

It is the inner diameter of the ring — the distance straight across the inside of the band, edge to edge, through the middle.

That is it. No scale, no conversion, no invented number. A 17MM ring has a hole 17 millimetres across. It is the most honest sizing system in use anywhere, which is probably why it never caught on in the West.

The most common ring finger size sits at 17 to 18MM. If you are buying a surprise gift and have nothing else to go on, 17MM is the safest guess for a woman and 19MM for a man — but read the section on guessing below before you rely on that.

How do I measure my ring size at home in Pakistan?

Two methods. The second is better.

Method 1: Measure a ring you already own

This is the most reliable thing you can do. Take a ring that fits the correct finger, lay it flat, and measure straight across the inside with a ruler — not the outside edge, the inside hole.

That number in millimetres is your Zanvari size. 17mm across the inside means order 17MM. No conversion needed.

Method 2: The string method — and the maths people get wrong

Wrap a strip of paper or a piece of thread around the base of your finger. Mark where it overlaps. Lay it flat and measure the length in millimetres.

That number is your circumference, not your diameter. This is where most people go wrong — they measure 53mm of string and order a 53mm ring, which does not exist.

Divide your circumference by 3.14.

Example: string measures 53mm. 53 ÷ 3.14 = 16.9. Order 17MM.

Why do Pakistani ring sizes differ from US sizes?

Because the US and UK systems are historical accidents and ours is not.

US sizes run on a formula nobody can do in their head: each full size adds roughly 0.8mm to the diameter, starting from an arbitrary base. UK sizes use letters, which convey no information whatsoever about the physical object.

The subcontinental trade sizes by diameter because a karigar at a bench works in millimetres. When the ring needs to be a certain size, he measures it. There is no scale to look up because the measurement is the size.

This is also why a Pakistani jeweller can size any ring precisely rather than in half-size jumps. There is nothing to round to.

What if I am between two sizes?

Go up. Always.

Your fingers are not a fixed size. They swell in heat — and Karachi is hot for most of the year. They swell when you have been drinking water, when you have been working with your hands, at the end of the day, on a flight, in summer. They shrink in cold and in the morning.

A ring that fits perfectly at 9am in February may not go on at 4pm in June. A ring that is slightly loose is a ring you can wear every day. A ring that is slightly tight is a ring in a drawer.

The difference between 17MM and 18MM is one millimetre — about the thickness of a stack of ten hairs. It sounds like nothing. On your finger it is the difference between comfortable and stuck.

When should I measure my finger?

Late afternoon or evening, at normal room temperature.

Not first thing in the morning — fingers are at their smallest. Not straight after a workout, not after a hot shower, not when your hands are cold.

Measure three times on different days and take the largest reading. It costs you nothing and it is the single best thing you can do for a made-to-order ring.

Does the ring style change the size I need?

Yes, and this catches people.

Wide bands need to go up. A 8mm-wide men's band covers more of your finger and sits tighter than a 2mm ladies' band of the same diameter. If the band is wide, consider going up.

Comfort-fit bands run slightly large. The rounded interior means less metal contact, so they slide on easier. You can sometimes stay at your measured size or go down.

Knuckle matters more than the base. If your knuckle is significantly larger than the base of your finger, the ring has to clear the knuckle — then it will spin at the base. Measure the knuckle, then decide how much spin you can tolerate.

How do I find someone's ring size without asking?

The honest answer: it is difficult and people get it wrong constantly.

The reliable method is to borrow a ring she already wears on the correct finger — a ring from her right middle finger tells you nothing about her left ring finger — and measure the inside diameter with a ruler.

Everything else is folklore. Comparing to your own finger, guessing from her height, tracing her hand while she sleeps — these produce wrong answers more often than right ones.

If you cannot borrow a ring: order 17MM. It is the most common women's size. Then bring it to us and we will resize it. That is a far better outcome than a bad guess you never fix.

What if my ring does not fit?

Bring it in. We will resize it.

We are a workshop, not a warehouse. A ring that needs to go up or down a size is bench work, and our karigars have been doing it for decades.

One thing to know: engraved and custom pieces cannot be returned or refunded, and resizing an engraved band is more complicated than resizing a plain one. If you are engraving, be certain of the size before you order. This is not us being difficult — it is that a personalised ring cannot be sold to anyone else.
