Aqeeq Stone: Meaning, Types, Benefits & Price in Pakistan (Complete Guide)
Aqeeq — known in English as agate or carnelian — is the most beloved gemstone in the Muslim world, worn for centuries as a mark of faith, dignity, and tradition. In Pakistan you'll hear it called aqeeq, haqeeq, or aqiq; they're the same stone. This guide covers what makes an aqeeq genuine, the difference between Yamni and Sulemani varieties, how the stone is traditionally worn, and what a real aqeeq ring costs in Pakistan today.
What is Aqeeq?
Aqeeq is a form of chalcedony quartz that forms in volcanic rock over millions of years. The most prized pieces are deep red to orange-red carnelian, though aqeeq also occurs in black, grey-banded (Sulemani), yellow, and milky white.
What separates aqeeq from ordinary decorative agate is provenance and treatment. The stones with real standing in tradition are natural, untreated pieces — cut and polished, but never dyed or heat-treated to fake a richer colour. At Zanvari, every aqeeq we set is a natural, untreated stone.
Aqeeq in Islamic tradition
No gemstone carries more weight in Islamic culture. It is widely reported in tradition that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ wore a silver ring set with an aqeeq stone, and companions and scholars through the centuries followed the practice. Hazrat Ali (RA) is particularly associated with the aqeeq ring, which is why the stone holds special significance across both Sunni and Shia communities.
Because of this heritage, an aqeeq ring is one of the few pieces of jewellery men wear across Pakistan without it ever being a fashion statement first — it is a statement of identity. It's also one of the most common gifts for a father, a son on his nikah, or a friend returning from Hajj or Umrah.
A note on benefits: many people believe aqeeq brings courage, calm, and protection from harm. These are traditional beliefs held dear by millions — we present them as heritage, not as medical or worldly guarantees.
Types of Aqeeq: Yamni, Sulemani, and more
| Type | Colour | What makes it special |
|---|---|---|
| Yamni (Yemeni) Aqeeq | Deep red to reddish-orange | The most prized variety, historically mined in Yemen. Rich, saturated colour with a soft internal glow. The classic choice for a first aqeeq ring. |
| Sulemani Aqeeq | Grey/black with white banding | Named after Prophet Sulaiman (AS) in folk tradition. Distinctive banded look; understated, older-generation character. |
| Black Aqeeq | Deep black | Bold and modern-looking while still a traditional stone. Suits oxidised silver settings. |
| Red Agate (Aqeeq-e-Ahmar) | Bright red | Vivid and eye-catching; often chosen for statement rings. |
Yamni aqeeq is the gold standard. If a seller can't tell you whether a stone is Yemeni-origin, treat the "Yamni" label with suspicion — most cheap bazaar stones sold as Yamni are dyed Indian or Brazilian agate.
How to tell an original aqeeq from a fake
The Pakistani market is flooded with dyed glass and treated agate sold as aqeeq. Five checks:
- Temperature — real aqeeq feels cool against your cheek and warms slowly. Glass warms almost immediately.
- Colour depth — a genuine stone has slight natural variation, cloud-like zoning, or banding inside. A perfectly uniform, flat colour usually means dye.
- Surface — under a loupe, real aqeeq shows a waxy, slightly granular polish. Glass shows swirl marks and bubbles.
- Hardness — aqeeq (hardness ~6.5–7) will scratch glass. Glass won't scratch glass cleanly.
- Ask in writing — the most reliable check. Buy from a seller who states "natural, untreated" in writing and stands behind it.
Every Zanvari aqeeq piece uses natural, untreated stone — stated in writing on each product page, not just said in a shop.
How is aqeeq traditionally worn?
- Which hand? Tradition supports both; the right hand is the more commonly cited practice.
- Which finger? The little finger is the classical choice; the ring finger is also widely used.
- Which metal? Sterling silver (925 chandi), following the tradition of the Prophet's ﷺ own silver ring. Gold rings are impermissible for men in Islam, which is why a proper men's aqeeq ring is always silver.
- Stone touching the skin? Some prefer an open-back setting so the stone touches the finger; both settings are traditionally acceptable.
Aqeeq stone and ring price in Pakistan (2026)
Loose aqeeq stones range from a few hundred rupees (dyed, treated, or synthetic — avoid) to several thousand for genuine natural pieces, with Yemeni-origin stones commanding the highest prices.
For a finished piece — natural stone, 925 sterling silver, handcrafted setting — realistic prices in Pakistan look like this (Zanvari's own current range, made in our Karachi workshop):
| Piece | Stone | Price (PKR) |
|---|---|---|
| Natural Aqeeq Bracelet | Natural red aqeeq, certified | Rs 15,000 |
| Shade of Heritage Ring | Black aqeeq, 925 silver | Rs 22,000 |
| Noor-e-Qalb Ring | Red agate, 925 silver | Rs 22,000 |
| Aqeeq-e-Yamini | Authentic Yemeni aqeeq, 925 silver | Rs 28,200 |
| Al-Qudra — The Power | Natural Yamni aqeeq, oxidised 925 silver | Rs 38,900 |
If you see a "Yamni aqeeq silver ring" for Rs 2,000–5,000, you are almost certainly looking at a dyed stone in low-grade or plated metal. The stone alone, if genuine, is worth more than that.
Frequently asked questions
What is aqeeq stone called in English?
Agate — specifically carnelian for the classic red variety. Aqeeq, haqeeq, and aqiq all refer to the same family of stones.
Which aqeeq is best?
Yamni (Yemeni) aqeeq is the most prized, valued for its deep red colour and its standing in Islamic tradition. Sulemani aqeeq is the classic banded alternative.
Is wearing aqeeq sunnah?
It is widely reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ wore a silver ring, and many traditions describe it as set with aqeeq. Scholars differ on the details, but wearing a silver aqeeq ring is a long-established and respected practice among Muslims.
Which hand and finger should aqeeq be worn on?
Most commonly the little or ring finger of the right hand, though tradition permits both hands.
Can men wear aqeeq in gold?
No — gold jewellery is impermissible for men in Islam. A men's aqeeq ring should be sterling silver, which is also the traditional metal.
How much does an original aqeeq ring cost in Pakistan?
A genuine natural aqeeq in a real 925 sterling silver handcrafted setting starts around Rs 22,000 in Pakistan. Authentic Yamni aqeeq pieces range from roughly Rs 28,000 to Rs 40,000. (Prices as of July 2026 — see current prices on the product pages above.)
How do I know my aqeeq is original?
Check for natural colour zoning, the cool-to-touch test, and — most reliably — buy from a seller who states "natural, untreated" in writing.
