The story behind the ring
Hurrem Sultan — known in the West as Roxelana — was the most powerful woman in the Ottoman Empire and the wife of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. The Ottoman treasury at Topkapı was famous for its sapphires, and blue was the colour of the imperial court: of the Blue Mosque's tiles, of Iznik ceramics, of royal robes. The Hurrem Sultan Sapphire Ring draws from this tradition — a deep royal blue sapphire framed in Ottoman-inspired silver and gold detailing, designed for a woman who carries herself with the same quiet authority.
Lab-created vs natural sapphire
A lab-created sapphire is real corundum — the same mineral, crystal structure, and hardness (9 on the Mohs scale) as a natural sapphire. It is lab-created. Lab-created sapphires have the same mineral composition (aluminium oxide) and the same blue colour as natural sapphires. They are not glass, not imitation, and not cubic zirconia. The distinction from natural sapphire is only in origin, not in chemistry.
Why lab-created rather than natural?
Natural sapphires of clean, even royal blue are rare and expensive. Most affordable natural sapphires are heavily included or unevenly coloured. What are the accent stones?
The stones surrounding the sapphire are moissanite — a genuine gemstone scoring 9.25 on the Mohs scale, with more fire than diamond. Its sparkle is permanent and will never cloud or dull.
