The king of gems

Ruby and sapphire are the same mineral, corundum; a single trace of chromium turns it red, and that same chromium makes a good ruby glow under sunlight. Ancient Sanskrit texts called it ratnaraj, the king of gems, and Burmese warriors wore it into battle for protection. Yaqoot has been the stone of courage and authority across the subcontinent for two thousand years, and Pakistan has its own historic deposits in the Hunza valley. A single large ruby in a plain bezel is the most direct expression of that tradition.

About the stone

Most ruby on the world market, including this stone, is heat-treated to improve colour and clarity — a permanent practice accepted in the trade for centuries. What Zanvari does not sell is glass-filled or synthetic ruby. Every natural stone is unique: expect the shade of your ruby to differ from the photograph, from pinkish-red to deep crimson, and fine silk inclusions are normal and a sign of authenticity. If the colour isn't what you hoped for, we're happy to exchange it for another stone in your preferred shade.

Care

Ruby scores 9 on the Mohs scale — second only to diamond and moissanite — and suits daily wear without worry. Wipe with a soft cloth and mild soapy water. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners if the stone has visible inclusions.
