The stone from the sky
Peridot is gem-quality olivine, a mineral that makes up much of the Earth's mantle and reaches the surface through volcanic rock. It is also the only gemstone found in meteorites. The ancient Egyptians mined it on Zabargad island in the Red Sea and called it "the gem of the sun" — the island's name survives in the Urdu zabarjad. In 1994 a landslide in the Sapat valley of Kohistan, high in the Himalayas, exposed the deposit that made Pakistan the world's most important source of fine peridot: large, clean, richly coloured stones that rival the legendary Egyptian material. This ring is cut from that tradition.
About the stone
Peridot is almost never treated — the colour is exactly how it came out of the ground, produced by iron inside the crystal itself. That is why peridot only comes in one colour: green, from bright lime to deep olive. It is a stone of warmth, good fortune, and protection from envy, and the birthstone of August. Every natural stone is unique: expect the shade of your peridot to differ from the photograph, and small inclusions are normal. If the colour isn't what you hoped for, we're happy to exchange it for another stone in your preferred shade.
Care
Peridot scores 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale — fine for daily wear, but softer than sapphire or ruby, so remove the ring for heavy work and avoid hard knocks. No ultrasonic or steam cleaners; wipe with a soft damp cloth and mild soapy water. The full bezel protects the stone's edges where claws would leave them exposed.
