Pakistan's own gemstone

Peridot is not a stone Pakistan imports. Some of the finest peridot in the world comes out of the Sapat Gah deposit in Kohistan, at roughly 15,000 feet in the Himalaya — discovered in the 1990s and prized internationally for the size and clarity of its crystals. Pakistani peridot regularly produces clean stones well above ten carats, a size that most other sources cannot reach.

The 4 to 5 carat stone in this ring is substantial by any standard. On a signet dome, where the bezel sits proud of a solid silver face, a stone that size has room to be seen properly rather than crowded by metal.

Why peridot is unusual

Peridot forms in the earth's mantle, far deeper than most gemstones, and reaches the surface only through volcanic activity. It has also been found in meteorites — one of very few gemstones known to exist beyond this planet.

It is also the stone most often mistaken for something else. Much of what was historically called emerald in the ancient world was peridot: the 200-carat green stones in the Shrine of the Three Kings at Cologne Cathedral were believed to be emeralds for centuries before being identified as peridot, and many of Cleopatra's celebrated emeralds are now thought to have been the same. The confusion is understandable — but peridot has a distinct character of its own. Its green carries a warm, golden undertone rather than the cool blue-green of emerald, and it holds that colour under artificial light where many stones go flat.

Zabarjad has been worn across Islamic, Egyptian, and South Asian traditions as a stone of protection and clarity. It is associated with warding off negativity, dispelling anxiety, and bringing lightness of spirit — historically worn to protect against night terrors and ill intent. Care instructions

Peridot scores 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale — softer than sapphire or ruby, and it should be treated accordingly. Remove the ring before manual work, sport, or anything abrasive. Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners, and avoid sudden temperature changes and acids. Clean with a soft damp cloth only. Store separately from harder stones so they cannot scratch it. Is the peridot natural?

Will my stone look exactly like the photograph?

Not exactly. Every natural peridot has its own colour saturation and internal features. The photograph shows one example of what you will receive — your stone will be in the same carat range and the same quality tier, but it will be its own stone.

Is this ring suitable for daily wear?

With reasonable care, yes. The bezel setting protects the girdle of the stone, which is the most vulnerable part, and the solid signet construction is built to take weight. But peridot is a softer gemstone than corundum, so this is a ring to take off before heavy or manual work rather than one to forget you are wearing.

Is peridot the same as emerald?

No — they are entirely different minerals, though they have been confused for millennia. Emerald is a beryl coloured by chromium; peridot is a magnesium iron silicate whose green comes from iron. Peridot's green is warmer and more golden, and unlike emerald it is not typically treated or oiled.
