HOW THIS RING CAME TO BE

A client came to our shop in Saddar with a description rather than a design. His partner had told him what she wanted, and he had written it down more or less word for word: an oval stone, and a band that looked like something growing.

She did not want a plain solitaire and she did not want a straight row of stones down the sides. She wanted the ring to look the way light does on a forest floor — scattered, uneven, alive. It was a clear feeling and a difficult brief, which is usually how the good ones arrive.

We started with the oval, because she had been specific about it. An oval reads longer on the finger than a round stone of the same weight and carries the light differently — it pools along the length instead of firing straight back at you.

The band took longer. Our karigars set the halo as petals rather than a uniform ring of stones, each one on its own claw, sitting at slightly different heights so the edge is irregular the way a flower's edge is. The shoulders then step down in graduated stones — large near the crown, tapering as they run toward the back — so the setting appears to grow out of the band rather than being fixed onto it. Nothing on this ring is perfectly symmetrical, and that was the point.

He collected it, she said yes, and we asked whether we could make it again.

WHY MOISSANITE

Moissanite carries more fire than diamond — it disperses light into colour more strongly, which is why the halo on this ring flashes rather than simply shines. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale it is harder than every gemstone except diamond, so it holds an edge and a polish through daily wear.
