Why Silver Jewellery Costs More in 2026 — and Why It's Still the Smart Buy in Pakistan

Rates in this article are as of 16 September 2026. Silver and gold move daily; the arithmetic still holds.

If you priced a silver ring last September and priced the same ring this week, you noticed the difference. So did we. Our workshop in Saddar has been buying silver since 1947, and we issue pure silver to our karigars by the gram for every job — so when the metal moves, we feel it the same day you do.

This is the explanation we would give you across the counter: what happened to silver, how much of it actually reaches the price of a ring, and why — with gold where it is — sterling silver and moissanite have become the sensible choice for engagement and nikkah jewellery in Pakistan.

What happened to silver, in numbers

Silver had the wildest year most jewellers can remember. Over the past 52 weeks it swung from a low of $40.89 an ounce on 11 September 2025 to an all-time high of $121.58 on 29 January 2026. January was the first time silver had crossed $50 in 45 years — and it did not stop there.

It has since come back down to earth. On 16 September 2026, silver is trading at about $64.64 per troy ounce, or roughly $2.08 per gram. That is a long way below January's peak, but still around 54% higher than the same time last year.

In rupee terms, the Sarafa market has silver at Rs 6,802 per tola this week; it touched Rs 7,141 on 10 September. A year ago the same tola cost roughly Rs 4,400.

So the short version: silver did not creep up. It doubled, overshot, and settled at about one-and-a-half times last year's price.

Why it moved

Three things happened at once, and none of them were about jewellery.

Supply was already tight. The 2025 spike came from a mix of tariff risk, supply shortages and fears of currency debasement. As tariff threats grew, American companies began stockpiling silver at home, the London market ran low on available metal, and all of this landed on top of six years of mining deficits and limited refinery capacity.

Silver is a small market with big industrial demand. The silver market is far smaller than gold's, so the same money moves its price much further in percentage terms — and unlike gold, silver also has heavy industrial demand, from solar panels to electronics. When investors who could no longer afford gold turned to silver, there was not much of it to go around.

Then interest rates changed the mood. This week silver is near a five-week low, weighed down by a stronger dollar and higher bond yields, with the US Federal Reserve widely expected to raise rates by a quarter point — its first increase in about three years. Metal pays no interest, so when rates rise, some of that money leaves.

Where it goes next, nobody knows — and we would rather say that than pretend otherwise. We are jewellers, not analysts.

How the silver price actually reaches your ring

This is the part most brands do not show you.

Sterling silver, stamped 925, is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper alloy for strength. A typical women's ring weighs 4–6 grams; a men's ring 8–15 grams; a pendant 3–5; a bangle 15–25.

Take a 5-gram ring. That is 4.625 grams of fine silver. At this week's Sarafa rate of about Rs 583 per gram (Rs 6,802 divided by the 11.664 grams in a tola), the silver in that ring costs about Rs 2,700. A year ago it was roughly Rs 1,750.

For a 12-gram men's ring, the silver is about Rs 6,500 today against roughly Rs 4,200 last year.

Now look at everything else on the invoice for a made-to-order piece:

What you are paying for What it covers
Fine silver By weight, at the day's rate — plus the metal lost to filing and polishing
Karigar's making (majoori) Hand-casting, setting and finishing — hours of skilled work per piece
The stone D/VVS1 moissanite, with a GRA grading card available for centre stones of 0.5 carat and above
Rhodium plating The bright white, tarnish-resistant finish — replated free, for life
Finishing, packaging, delivery Polish, box, pouch, care cloth, and nationwide cash-on-delivery via PostEx

The point: silver is one line among five. On a moissanite engagement ring, the stone and the karigar's hours are bigger lines than the metal. A 54% rise in silver adds about Rs 950 to a 5-gram ring — noticeable, but nowhere near 54% of the price. Where you will have felt it more is heavy, plain pieces — men's bands, bangles, chains — because there the metal is most of the piece.

One more thing worth knowing about a made-to-order workshop: we do not sit on stock bought at old prices, and we do not have to price "in case" the metal spikes. Your piece is priced on what silver costs when it is made, and the price at checkout is the price you pay at the door.

The bigger story: gold

Silver rising 54% sounds dramatic until you look at gold.

24-karat gold is at Rs 449,336 per tola in Pakistan this week. 22-karat — the standard purity for Pakistani wedding jewellery — is around Rs 412,000 per tola, or roughly Rs 35,350 per gram.

Put the same 5-gram ring in 22K gold and the metal alone is about Rs 1.77 lakh — before a single rupee of making charges. The same 5 grams in 925 silver is about Rs 2,700. That is a gap of roughly 65 times, for a ring that weighs and wears the same.

Scale it up to a modest two-tola bridal set and the gold alone is over Rs 8 lakh.

This is the trade-off more and more couples are making: gold as savings — bought by the tola, kept in the locker — and silver with moissanite as the jewellery you actually wear. We wrote about the gold side of this in June, in Gold Prices in Pakistan Are at Record Highs — Why Smart Buyers Are Choosing Silver; this is the silver-side update.

Why 925 and moissanite is the engagement and nikkah answer

It looks the part. A one-carat moissanite in a hand-set, rhodium-plated 925 setting has the white-gold look and more fire than a diamond of the same size — at a price where the matching band and earrings are also within reach. There are more than sixty moissanite engagement rings under Rs 20,000 on this site alone.

It is honest about what it is. Silver jewellery is not a savings instrument, and we will not sell it to you as one. Buy it because you will wear it. If silver's rise means there is a little more metal value in your ring than there was last year, that is a bonus, not the reason.

It is built to last, and backed. Our silver pieces are rhodium-plated and come with lifetime free replating, so they stay white. Workmanship is covered for six months — if a clasp loosens or a stone comes loose in normal wear, we fix it free. Size changes are free within 30 days. And a 925 stamp is the same international sterling standard used by fine jewellers everywhere — it is not the "chandi" of a market stall (here is how to tell the difference).

Should you buy now or wait?

We cannot tell you where silver goes next, and anyone who says they can is guessing. Two practical things we can tell you:

  1. Most of a ring's price does not move with the Fed. The karigar's hours and the stone cost the same whether silver is $60 or $70. Waiting for the metal to fall saves you a few hundred rupees on a piece that takes weeks to make.
  2. Wedding season is six weeks away. Made to order means a piece ordered now is finished in roughly two to three weeks — comfortably before November's dates. Order in November and you are competing with everyone else's dates. Not sure of her size? Start with our ring size guide for Pakistan.

Frequently asked questions

Why is silver so expensive in 2026?

Years of mining deficits met a surge of investment demand once gold became unaffordable, plus stockpiling ahead of US tariffs. Silver hit a record $121.58 an ounce in January 2026 and has since settled around $64 — still about 54% above last year.

How much is silver per tola in Pakistan today?

Around Rs 6,800 per tola in the week of 16 September 2026, according to Sarafa rates. It changes daily, so check the day's rate before comparing prices.

How much silver is actually in a 925 ring?

92.5% of the ring's weight. A 5-gram ring holds 4.625 grams of fine silver — about Rs 2,700 worth at this week's rate.

Will silver jewellery prices come down?

If silver falls, the metal portion of the price falls with it. But metal is a minority of a handcrafted piece's cost, so do not expect big swings in either direction.

Is 925 silver jewellery still worth buying at these prices?

Yes — for wearing. A 5-gram silver ring carries about Rs 2,700 of metal; the same ring in 22K gold carries about Rs 1.77 lakh. For jewellery you will wear every day, silver with moissanite is the better value by a distance.

Does Zanvari change the price after I order?

No. The price at checkout is the price you pay on delivery.
